One of my favorite reactions to get out of people is their faces after telling them the story of how I met my boyfriend. In today’s swiping society, it isn’t uncommon for people to meet on an app, and I guess it is technically thanks to an app that I met Kenny!
Despite being one of the biggest cities in the world, NYC is an incredibly difficult place to meet a significant other in. When I moved to New York 2 years ago I knew no one, and it took awhile to make my initial friends. Once I did, they all talked about how it was hard to meet someone wanting a serious relationship in the city. One night I was out watching comedy in the West Village with a friend and decided to take an Uber pool home. If you’re unfamiliar with Uber pool, it’s a service through Uber that saves some money on your trip by essentially being a carpool, where your driver may pick up other people going in the same drop off area as you. Lucky for me, this was one of the best choices I ever made.
When I hopped into the car there was a guy already in the backseat. I didn’t think much of it, as I take tons of Uber pools in the city and no one in them ever speaks to me. This was not the case that night however. As we were driving over the bridge back into Brooklyn, the guy beside me looked over and asked where I was coming back from and we quickly realized we lived in the same neighborhood. I was so excited to meet someone who actually lived near me! We talked the entire 30 minute ride back and we got to his apartment first. He looked over at me and said “See you around the neighborhood” and got out of the car. I was so sad he didn’t ask for my number.
I attempted to get it from my driver but once he had gotten out the number was no longer visible to the driver (yes I am bold I know haha). I got back to my apartment and told the story to Meredith, the mom who I am a nanny for. She immediately decided we would be able to find him (I literally only knew his first name and where he worked) and googled it. Lucky for me, he was actually twitter famous and because he worked in media, was the top person to come up on Instagram! I decided to follow him, but immediately felt like a total creep and decided not to message him or anything, and went to bed feeling really silly. Thankfully, Kenny had just been too nervous to ask for my number and had actually gone home and tried to look me up, too. I woke up to a message from him and the rest is history.
I am so grateful for social media and car services haha! City life has given me many gifts, but the best by far has been Kenny, who as cheesy as it sounds, is my very best friend and I can not even begin to imagine my life without him. His encouragement and love pushed me to start this very blog! So happy one year ago today, I stepped foot into that car, and into life with Kenny.
